On Writing Songs With No Fixed Genre
Every song starts with a feeling that will not sit still. Only later does it decide what to wear.

Every song starts the same way: with a feeling that will not sit still. Only later does it decide what it wants to wear.
Some feelings want a piano and a long reverb tail. Some want a drum loop and a wicked grin. Some want the cadence of a folk song that has been hummed in kitchens for generations. Forcing all of them into one genre would be like forcing every thought into one sentence.
Three questions before every song
- What is the feeling underneath the feeling?
- What would this sound like if it were honest instead of impressive?
- Which language does it want to be sung in?
The answers decide everything else: the tempo, the instruments, even whether the song needs words at all.
